UK men fret about hair, weight, looks but do little

It's supposed to be a mark of distinction, but going grey is now the top concern for British men, according to new research.# Hair color is the number one appearance concern for men today, with more than half of British men worrying about graying hair, and 45 marks the age when panic really sets in, according to a poll from market research firm Mintel.# "Although grey hair is traditionally seen as a mark of distinction in men, the reality is many men are unhappy with their newfound gravitas," Mintel Head of Beauty Research Vivienne Rudd said in a statement.# "The physical changes associated with aging can act as a catalyst to mid-life crisis and our research has discovered that men become less content with their appearance after the age of 45."# Hair loss or thinning, is the second most common concern, worrying 40 percent of the respondents to the Mintel survey of 2,000 British men.# Unwanted hair (in the nose and ears) preoccupied 38 percent of respondents, being overweight bothered 37 percent and 30 percent were worried about yellowing teeth.# Mintel said that men appeared to be more accepting than women when it came to their appearance, but found that at 45 years of age, men become increasingly less happy with their looks.# More than a quarter of men aged 45-54 dislike four aspects of their appearance compared to an average of just over one in 10 men overall.# As with all men, hair is the biggest concern for those aged over 45, with more than half of men aged 45-54 worrying about hair loss. Graying hair worried 75 percent of men in this age group. However, fading or thinning hair wasn't the only concern.# As many as half of this age group also worry about unsightly nose or ear hair.# Rudd said that delayed retirement and working later into life than their parents did as the British population ages will bring older men into competition with younger colleagues.# "As a result, older people may feel the need to try to maintain appearance and therefore bring a future boost to the male grooming market," she said.# Despite the high level of concern many men display about their appearance, as many as 45 percent of all men remain unengaged with toiletries and this rises to over half of those aged between 45 and 54. Just over a third of men use as few personal care products as possible, while 31 percent have little interest in beauty and personal care products.# "Older men are significantly more likely than younger men to disregard a number of beauty and personal care products as being completely unnecessary and are also less content with the product results," Rudd said. Sisters Ravindra and Meeta Singh both had their stomachs removed to beat the cancer which had killed five members of their family.# They both carry the rare mutant E-cadherin gene, seen in around 100 families worldwide, which makes them more prone to stomach cancer and breast cancer.# Ravindra, 30, already had stomach cancer by the time she had her operation, Meeta decided on the surgery as a preventative measure.# Almost a year after surgery the sisters, from Liverpool, say they are learning to live again, but admit things have been very hard.# "I am a lot better than I was in the earlier months, but obviously there are still side effects from having no stomach," said Ravindra, who says she often feels tired and dizzy.# If you have not got a stomach then you have to have lots of small meals”# End Quote Simon Dexter # "It's a year since the surgery and I'm still scared to go out and enjoy a meal out," she said.# "When I first came out of surgery the amount I could eat was very minimal, almost spoonfuls. But almost a year has gone by now and I probably eat about a third of what I used to be able to eat - so it is improving.# "But if I overeat, a few moments after I've finished eating, I'll feel discomfort, indigestion, have some acid reflux and then you get what's called 'dumping' syndrome which is unfortunately just what it sounds like - urgent diarrhoea."# Meeta agreed: "It depends what food we're eating but if it's a food we're not supposed to eat, like bread for instance, you can feel the sensation passing down your throat - you can feel it expanding."# Both sisters have lost about 20% of their body weight over the year - with Ravindra dropping to just eight stones (50.8 kilos).# Surgery - the only answer # Simon Dexter, a consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Meeta's surgeon, said that although it was a major operation it was possible to live without a stomach.# "The gut is basically a tube, which goes from top to bottom. The stomach is basically a swelling in the tube, so when you take it out you close the gap," he said.# "The main function of the stomach is storage. It allows us to have a big meal and then not worry about it for a while.# "If you have not got a stomach then you have to have lots of small meals.# "The acid in the stomach also helps to sterilise food, but that is not so relevant today as we are not scratching around in the dirt digging up grubs.# "It also helps absorption of iron and vitamin B12, so you do need extra supplements. As long as you supplement the various minerals then it should not have any profound effect on general well-being."# And he said removing the stomach was the only answer for patients who had the disease.# "I do get screening every six months - histology said the cancer had not spread," said Ravindra.# "It was the only option. If I hadn't had it I wouldn't be here."# But Meeta, aged 25, said she had felt that she too had no option.# "I elected for the surgery as a preventative measure partially based on family history, the fact that my dad died of it when I was 10 years old.# "When my sister had cancer, it made me change my mind. I'd been quite reluctant up to then."# And she said she would not have been happy relying on her regular screening.# "It's so easily missed," she said. Obesity is associated with hypertension (HT) and high resting heart rate (HR), as well as metabolic disturbances. However, little is known about how strongly these hemodynamic abnormalities are associated with the degree of obesity in adolescents. METHODS AND RESULTS: Height, body weight, resting HR, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured in 20,165 male and 19,683 female high-school students. Adiposity levels were classified into 6 groups by body mass index: group 1 (<20th percentile), group 2 (20th-39.9th percentile), group 3 (40th-59.9th percentile), group 4 (60th-79.9th percentile), group 5 (80th-98.9th percentile), and group 6 (> or =99th percentile). Systolic and diastolic hypertensions were defined as > or =140 mmHg and > or =85 mmHg, respectively. Resting tachycardia was defined as the corresponding 95th percentile or greater. Resting HR and systolic and diastolic blood pressures increased with adiposity level in both sexes (p<0.0001). Both systolic HT and diastolic HT were associated with high resting HR, and the clustering of these unfavorable conditions increased with the degree of obesity.# Hemodynamic abnormalities, such as HT and a high resting HR, are closely associated with adolescent obesity and are probably explained by impaired autonomic nerve function.#

New hope in fight against Alzheimer's disease

Australian researchers have discovered a drug that could delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease and improve quality of life for sufferers.# A trial of 78 people conducted in Sydney, Melbourne and Sweden showed patients who took the drug for 12 weeks had a significant improvement in their ability to plan and carry out everyday activities.# Professor Colin Masters, from the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria at the University of Melbourne, said the drug could be the first to slow or reverse the early effects of Alzheimer's disease.# "Disease modification, where you modify or slow down the rate of decline, is the holy grail because you can potentially delay the onset of the disease if you get in early," he said.# Dementia affects 220,000 Australians. That figure is expected to rise to 731,000 by 2050.# Alzheimer's Australia executive director Glenn Rees said scientific modelling showed the ability to delay the progression of dementia by five years would halve the number of people with the disease by 2040.# He said current medications could be used to treat the symptoms of dementia, such as memory loss, but they did not slow or stop the progression of the disease.# A survey of 1380 people released last month by Alzheimer's Australia and drug company Pfizer found three-quarters of those would take a test predicting their likelihood of developing the disease, if it was available. Indian military scientists are studying an 82-year-old who claims he has not had any food or drink for 70 years. # Mr Jani, who claims to have left home aged seven and lived as a wandering sadhu or holy man in Rajasthan, is regarded as a 'breatharian' who can live on a 'spiritual life-force' alone. He believes he is sustained by a goddess who pours an 'elixir' through a hole in his palate. His claims have been supported by an Indian doctor who specializes in studies of people who claim supernatural abilities, but he has also been dismissed by others as a "village fraud."# India's Defence Research Development Organisation, whose scientists develop drone aircraft, intercontinental ballistic missiles and new types of bombs. They believe Mr Prahlad could teach them to help soldiers survive longer without food, or disaster victims to hang on until help arrives.# "If his claims are verified, it will be a breakthrough in medical science," said Dr G Ilavazhagan, director of the Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences.# "We will be able to help save human lives during natural disasters, high altitude, sea journeys and other natural and human extremities. We can educate people about the survival techniques in adverse conditions with little food and water or nothing at all."# So far, Mr Prahlad appears to be standing up to scrutiny. He has not eaten or drunk any fluids in six days, and similarly has not passed urine or a stool in that time. He remains fit and healthy and shows no sign of lethargy. Most humans cannot survive without food for 50 days. The longest hunger strike recorded is 74 days.# Prahlad Jani is being held in isolation in a hospital in Ahmedabad, Gurjarat, where he is being closely monitored by India's defence research organization, who believe he may have a genuine quality which could help save lives.# He has now spent six days without food or water under strict observation and doctors say his body has not yet shown any adverse effects from hunger or dehydration.# According to Dr Sudhir Shah, who examined him in 2003, he went without food or water for ten days in which urine appeared to be reabsorbed by his body after forming in his bladder. A lack of exercise is not to blame for increased levels of childhood obesity, scientists have claimed.# A new report suggests that physical inactivity appears to be the result of fatness, not its cause.# Researchers now believe that overfeeding by parents and children eating more junk food is the root cause of weight gain.# The report also said targeting nutrition rather than exercise was the best way to help obese children lose weight.# The EarlyBird team followed more than 200 children in Plymouth over three years, monitoring their fat and exercise levels at regular intervals.# They found that body fat levels had an effect on physical activity, but that varying activity did not lead to any changes in fatness.# The paper, published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, suggests that overweight children may think about their body negatively, shying away from sports and exercise as a result.# Study director Professor Terence Wilkin, of the Peninsula Medical School, Plymouth said the findings have 'profound' implications for national health policy.# He said: 'It is well known that less active children are fatter, but that does not mean - as most people assume it does - that inactivity leads to fatness. # 'It could equally well be the other way round: that obesity leads to inactivity.' # Professor Wilkin said the research suggested improving a child's diet at an early age could be the answer to tackling obesity.# 'The implications are profound for public health policy, because the physical activity of children - crucial to their fitness and well-being - may never improve unless the burgeoning levels of childhood obesity are first checked,' he said.# 'If this cannot be achieved through physical activity - the focus has to be on what and how much children consume.'# The Early Bird study also found a strong link between childhood weight gain and parental obesity - but only parents of the same gender.# The team reported that a daughter of an obese woman was 10 times more likely to be obese than a girl with a mother of normal weight.#

Fidel Castro to release first volume of memoirs

Cuba's former President Fidel Castro has unveiled plans to release the first volume of his memoirs.# The book, to be called The Strategic Victory, will be published in August.# It will focus on the story of how just a few hundred revolutionaries under Mr Castro's command defeated the Cuban army in 1958.# Mr Castro, 83, said he had spent months working on the book since falling ill in 2006 and handing power to his brother Raul.# Among the many titles the former revolutionary said he considered for the 25-chapter book was "How 300 defeated 10,000".# The volume includes photographs, maps and plans of the guerrilla war against the dictator Fulgencio Batista, he told Cuban website cubadebate.cu. # There will also be a detailed account of the final offensive, which Mr Castro said lasted 74 days.# After Batista's army was defeated at the battle of Las Mercedes in the first week of August 1958, Mr Castro writes, "the fate of the tyranny was sealed". # "Its military collapse was imminent," he adds.# The rebel army suffered 31 deaths, while the government lost 300 troops and saw many more taken prisoner, according to Mr Castro. The rebel army seized a large amount of weapons and ammunition. # From then, the rebel army was in a position to launch its final, strategic offensive, the veteran communist writes. The war engulfed the whole country and Mr Castro's rebels took Havana on the first of January, 1959. # Fulgencio Batista then fled Cuba.# The Strategic Victory will also include a short autobiography. It has been more than 50 years since Drs. Albright and Reifenstein demonstrated that diabetes could be associated with loss of bone mass. Since that time, the relationship between osteopenia and type 1 diabetes has become well established, while the effects of type 2 diabetes on bone metabolism have remained less clear. One recent study demonstrated a greater than 12-fold higher risk for hip fractures in women with type 1 diabetes compared with the general population. Women with type 2 diabetes had a still significant but much smaller 1.7-fold increase in risk. Patients with type 2 diabetes taking insulin had a greater risk than patients taking oral agents or than patients not on pharmacotherapy, suggesting that the severity of the metabolic abnormalities might be related to the subsequent risk of fracture.# Interpretation of fracture data as a surrogate measure for bone metabolism is particularly difficult in patients with long-standing diabetes, because visual and neurologic complications can predispose patients to accidents resulting in an increased fracture risk not necessarily dependent on bone density alone. Other factors that make studies difficult to interpret include the presence of diabetic renal disease, autonomic and other neuropathic changes that could contribute to a loss of bone mineral, and a low level of physical activity related to diabetic complications. Also, women with diabetes are much less likely to be on estrogen replacement therapy.# What metabolic factors could contribute to the apparent abnormalities of bone metabolism in diabetes? In animal models of insulin-deficient diabetes, both decreased bone growth and formation have been demonstrated, along with reduced numbers of osteoblasts. Human studies using histomorphometry have demonstrated similar results. Levels of osteocalcin, a serum marker of bone formation, are often depressed in patients with diabetes, while markers of bone resorption have most often been found to be normal or minimally depressed in both type 1 and type 2 patients. Some recent studies, demonstrate a significant increase in serum markers of both bone resorption and formation with improved glycemic control, especially when the initial HgbA1C is greater than 10%. These findings suggest that a reduced rate of bone formation occurs in both forms of diabetes during periods of poor glycemic control, which is not accompanied by a proportional reduction in the rate of bone resorption.# Insulin has anabolic effects on bone, and it is tempting to hypothesize that abnormal insulin levels contribute to abnormalities of bone metabolism. Nevertheless, it has been difficult to correlate changes in the concentration of insulin with changes seen in markers of bone turnover. Other growth factors such as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which may depend in part on insulin, may have a stronger correlation with improved bone formation as the metabolic state is normalized. # While there is evidence for both an increased fracture rate and abnormal bone density in both forms of diabetes, the magnitude of risk is clearly greater for patients with classic type 1 disease. Differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes are probably influenced by the much greater body weight typical of the latter, because obesity per se is associated with increased bone density. Also, patients with type 1 diabetes may go through more frequent episodes of profound insulin deficiency and metabolic acidosis at an early age, when peak bone mass is being determined. A greater peak bone mineral density would be anticipated for patients with type 2 diabetes, whose disease generally starts later in life and who tend to be overweight. It is even possible that a low rate of bone turnover might help protect the skeleton from the development of overt osteoporosis in some older patients.# In summary, it is clear that there is an increased risk for low bone mineral density and particularly for bone fractures in patients with type 1 and, to a lesser extent, type 2 diabetes mellitus. These abnormalities may be related at least in part to prolonged periods of poor metabolic control and might be decreased by more aggressive treatment regimens. In particular, aggressive prevention of periods of severe metabolic decompensation may be beneficial. Certainly women with diabetes need to pay special attention to the prevention of osteoporosis by maintaining an adequate calcium and vitamin D intake. This will often require calcium supplementation, which may need to be started at an early age while peak bone mass is still developing. To the extent that diabetes contributes to bone mineral loss by decreased bone turnover, therapies that act solely through reductions in bone resorption, such as the bisphosphonates, may have a complex effect on the bone mineralization. It will be of interest to evaluate the effects of newer therapies that enhance formation as well as resorption, such as injections of parathyroid hormone, in this population. Finally, physicians need to remember that interventions in the home to prevent accidents for patients with poor vision, sensory and motor neuropathy, and orthostatic hypotension may well contribute more to reducing the risk for serious fractures than any metabolic intervention.#

So the message is that there may be new hope coming, but it’s certainly not here,” he says.# Levine’s team studied vitamin C (also called ascorbate or ascorbic acid) and cancer cells in lab tests. Vitamin C appeared to boost production of hydrogen peroxide, which killed cancer cells and left healthy cells unharmed.# The levels of vitamin C were so high that they could only be achieved through IV infusions.# “These findings give plausibility to IV ascorbic acid in cancer treatment, and have unexpected implications for treatment of infections where hydrogen peroxide may be beneficial,” write the researchers.#

Several genes affect tooth development in the first year of life, according to the findings of a study conducted at Imperial College London, the University of Bristol in the UK and the University of Oulu in Finland. The research, published February 26 in the open-access journal PLoS Genetics, shows that the teeth of babies with certain genetic variants tend to appear later and that these children have a lower number of teeth by age one. Additionally, those children whose teeth develop later are more likely to need orthodontic treatment. # The research, led by Professor Marjo-Riitta Jarvelin of the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, scanned the entire genetic code of 6,000 individuals from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort (NFBC1966) and the Avon Longitudinal Study on Parents and Children (ALSPAC), UK, both of which track participants from mother's early pregnancy until adulthood. The researchers identified five genes associated with both the first tooth eruption and the number of teeth at age one. They also found that one of the identified genes was associated with a 35% increased risk of requiring orthodontic treatment by the age of 30 years. # The authors emphasize that tooth development is not an isolated event. Teeth and several other organs have common growth and developmental pathways in early life. Some of the genes identified have been linked in previous studies with the development of the skull, jaws, ears, fingers, toes, and heart. # Abnormal tooth development may lead to dental problems that demand challenging and costly orthodontic treatment. The discovery of genes influencing tooth growth may lead to innovations in the early treatment and prevention of congenital dental and occlusion problems. Professor Marjo-Riitta Jarvelin said: "The discoveries of genetic and environmental determinants of human development will help us to understand the development of many disorders which appear later in life. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the major cause of adult blindness in developed countries. A large study involving researchers and patients from eight European countries now report that regular consumption of oily fish may reduce the risk of developing AMD by 53%. The study involved 105 patients with neovascular AMD and 2170 controls without any features of early or late AMD. All participants were 65 years of age or older. They were interviewed by field workers, underwent an eye examination, including fundus photography, and gave a blood sample. During the interview, dietary intake during the previous 12 months was assessed using a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. # Analysis of the collected data revealed that study participants who ate only oily fish (mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines and herring) once a week (one serving equaling 4 oz or 113 g) had half the risk of AMD when compared to those who ate oily fish less frequently. No beneficial effect was observed from consuming non-oily (white) fish such as cod. Not surprisingly, the researchers observed a strong correlation between oily fish intake and the dietary intake of the two main components of fish oil – EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Study participants whose energy-adjusted EPA + DHA intake was greater than 302 mg/day had one-third the risk of AMD than did those whose daily intake was 105 mg or less. # The researchers found no independent association between vitamin D intake and AMD risk and adjusting for lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and education did not affect the observed correlations. They point out that current recommendations for the combined intake of EPA and DHA range between 400 and 1000 mg/day, an amount that could be obtained by eating 2 servings of salmon or 26 servings of cod a week.# # Augood, C, et al.
